Spring in to the new Season with a trip to the UK

Following one of the wettest winters since record began, here in England, we eagerly await the warmer climate that typically comes with the spring season. While the worst of the bad weather may not quite have left us just yet, as the days get longer and the clocks go forward, visitors to the UK will be able to enjoy England at its best. Although there is no denying that a little bit sunshine makes everything better, British Spring time offers much more than just better weather.

Over the next few months, there is a whole range of events and activities on offer, many of which provide the perfect opportunity to enjoy a taste of traditional English life. Take for instance the classic Mellon Boat Race which takes place on the 4th April; this annual event sees rival rowing teams from the University of Oxford and Cambridge come head to head as they race along the River Thames from the starting point in Putney to the finish line in Mortlake. With 77 wins to Oxford and 81 to Cambridge, Oxford University will be hoping to have a repeat of last year’s success and further close the gap. Given that 2014 marks the 160th anniversary of the event, spectators should expect a fun-filled day with an electric atmosphere. The race starts at 6pm and is free for spectators. However, it is advisable to get there early in order to get a good spot along the river bank. While the Mellon Boat race is an unmissable event for sports enthusiast, for those that prefer something a little more relaxed, the Chocolate festival offers a sweeter way to enjoy spring. With everything from Easter eggs to chocolate spa treatments, the festival is undoubtedly the biggest celebration of chocolate in the UK. . The festivals start touring the UK at the end of March, stopping off at Brighton, Bristol and London before finally reaching Oxford.

In addition to the numerous intriguing events on offer, spring is also the season for celebrating St George’s day. While St George’s day is celebrated by a number of countries, the day is particularly important in England with celebrations taking place across the country. With live music, food stalls and cookery demonstrations taking place throughout the day, London’s Trafalgar Square is probably home to the biggest celebration. Considering the patriotic importance of this day for English people, there probably isn’t a better way to enjoy the spirit of England. With so much going on over the next few months, England promises to be an exciting destination regardless of whether you’re planning on staying for just a few days or perhaps a little longer.

While many will already have plans in place for the next few months, spring is always a great time of a year and it would be a shame to miss out on all the festivities.
