From Sports to Shakespeare: What does the United Kingdom have to offer in 2014?

With the birth of Prince George in July and the UK’s first Wimbledon win since 1936, 2013 was undeniably a hugely successful year for Great Britain. However, while the last 12 months has given us plenty to celebrate, 2014 is set to be equally as exciting. With so much going on, we have put together this list to highlight some the biggest events to watch out for this year.

Sports
Over 17 million people in England alone tuned in to watch Andy Murray’s triumphant victory at Wimbledon last summer. Although there are high hopes for Andy Murray to defend his title at this year’s tournament, tennis is not the only sporting event worth following in 2014.
For example, Glasgow is set to host the 2014 Commonwealth games. With athletes competing from countries as far afield as Australia and the USA, the Commonwealth games is a truly international athletics event and is one of the largest of its kind.
However, if athletics is not your sport of choice, the UK will also host 2 stages of this year’s tour de France. Given that for the last two consecutive years British competitors have dominated this prestigious cycling event, the race stages which will see cyclists take on the scenic Yorkshire Dales, is anticipated to attract huge crowds of spectators.

Shakespeare
While the sporting calendar for 2014 is brimming with opportunities to watch some of the world’s most celebrated athletes compete on British soil, 2014 is also an important year for the arts.
For instance, this year will mark the 450th birthday of William Shakespeare. Given that Shakespeare is often recognized as one of the most famous play writes, celebrations for this anniversary will be spread across the country. However, with a number of special events dedicated to his 450th birthday, Stratford upon Avon, the home town of Shakespeare, will be the best place to enjoy this momentous occasion.
Music
Although 2014 will be an important year for literature, the year ahead also looks promising for music fans. English summers have become synonymous with music festivals and the summer of 2014 is expected to be bigger than ever. It doesn’t matter if you prefer rock or reggae, with such a wide variety of festivals; you are bound to find a festival which features your favourite bands. While you may struggle to get tickets for Glastonbury, there are still plenty of other festivals to choose from.

Whether you wish to spend a couple of weeks exploring the UK or perhaps a little bit longer, with so many opportunities on offer in 2014, there has never been a better time to visit the UK.
